These drawings and this sketchbook played an important part in enabling me to revive or reclaim my passion for drawing. This was the first sketchbook I had owned after a thirty-year hiatus in my practice of drawing. I had started it while on a trip to Oslo representing the Northern Ireland Tourist Board at a conference on ecotourism. Three years on and the book was less than half full. Then I was asked to accompany a somewhat shy, Hungarian friend to a meeting of Creative writers amongst the European Commission's 2008 cohort of Summer Stagiares. I agreed but insisted that I would slip out once the talk started. But when the time came, I found myself boxed in, with no easy way out and a sketchbook in my hand. So what could I do but sketch; the first being the dark one with the wagging finger. And from that day, and for the next few months, I became the artist-in-residence amongst the Brussels Nerds, and am delighted that my drawings still feature as the banner on their blog. I have so much admiration for all of these folks who were writing great prose and poetry in what was their second or third language. You all became my friends and I hope that I managed to contribute as much to the group as I gained from it. While the sketches are not wonderful, the indivdual portraits are pretty recognisable, and for me they are packed with some very happy memories. John R November 2018
We are a group of friends who gather to write on a weekly basis. Some of us have some slight obsession – say with tractors, or talking animals – but the others are just normal people, sometimes even nice. Welcome to our blog. Contact: brusselsnerds [at] gmail [dot] com
